Custom pen trays

I rubbed down the paint I have been commissioned to make some custom pen trays for a dealer who travels to many pen shows in the UK and Internationally. The key issues were to make a strong tray that would be able to stack into hand luggage and also look attractive when displaying pens at shows. My initial thoughts were to make a solid pieces of wood by laminating two pieces of plywood to give sufficient depth to allow me to use a router to cut slots to make the mould. Unfortunately because of the way plywood is made and … Continue reading Custom pen trays

A new Emperor 2020

At the end of 2019 I was commissioned to make a slimline case for an Emperor fountain pen. Slimline means making the case as close a fit as possible the inside dimensions will be around 21 mm high and 26 mm wide the clip will sit across the wide dimension. The picture above shows how the pen will fit. A friend who is a woodturner made me a wooden blanc to the dimensions of an Emperor fountain pen. I have drawn a rough outline of how I want the case to look I also wrote down a sample of the … Continue reading A new Emperor 2020

Fountain pen case with Tile tracker

I have had an idea for some time to add a tracking device to a pen case so when the chance came to make it I did. This is a three pen case with a pocket for a tracking device. These are the kydex pen slots that give the case its strength Wrapping the Kydex pen slots in suede. The outer cover was next and needed a little more work as well as forming the outer cover I also had to form the pocket for the Tile tracking device. Keeping the top straight is the difficult part of this  task … Continue reading Fountain pen case with Tile tracker

Reviews

I don’t submit my cases for reviews mainly because I don’t have a lot of spare time and I only make cases to order. I appreciate Japanese craftsmanship in pens and swords I came across someone on youtube who also appreciated both Dr Stephen Brown. He had an unusually large pen and I made a case for him. I am not sure if the link will work so I have cut an pasted the text. http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/255117-making-a-pen-case/?p=3702909 Imagine you wanted to buy a luxury car, but on a middle manager salary. You poke around online and maybe check a few dealer … Continue reading Reviews

Pen trays

One of the best things about being a maker of pen cases is transformations I have converted many boxes to hold pens from writing slopes to empty cutlery boxes. Until now I have not done a chest of drawers so here it comes. A small antique chest of drawers needs some trays made to convert it to hold 80 fountain pens. Sounds pretty straight forward however the drawers are to valuable to ship to me so I have a fixed dimension. with that in mind I made a wooden frame to act as my sample drawer. I asked my timber … Continue reading Pen trays

Twin cigar style pen case

This is my most complicated case that I currently make it has lots of steps and takes many hours to get it right. Starting as all of my protective cases do with flat sheet Kydex which I formed around a wooden dowel. The seams are welded and smoothed the closed end is rounded over. When the Kydex had cooled I started wrapping them in suede. After both tubes were wrapped I took two pieces of 0.5mm leather and stitched up the centre. This piece fixes the two tubes together and allows the lid to be a friction fit without damaging … Continue reading Twin cigar style pen case

Fit for a King

I have been asked to make a pair of cases for the A.S.C. Three Kings set of pens. One single and one for all three. Burgundy leather with dark purple suede. Starting with a flat sheet of Kydex I heated it and formed it over a wooden mould to give me the individual pen slots for each pen. All I needed now was three more 🙂 Once the Kydex had cooled retaining the new shape I wrapped them in suede. First the single and then the thrapple. Having glued the suede in place I left it to dry and started … Continue reading Fit for a King

Triple cigar style case.

I have been asked before to make a three pen version of my cigar style case. I could not think of a way to stabalise the three tubes so I have always declined to make one. I don’t like turning down orders or admitting defeat so this time I said yes with the proviso if it did not work we would look at other options. Here we go I started with the flat sheet kydex which I cut into strips heated and formed it around a suitable sized dowel. The next step was to weld the sides of the kydex  … Continue reading Triple cigar style case.

Slimline triple Emperor

I was asked by someone who has a full size Emperor case if I could make a slimline version but still have the brogue effect. I do like a challenge so this post will detail how I created this case. I formed three Kydex pen slots as I was aiming to make the case as slim as possible I reduced the height of the slot to match the diameter of the cap without the clip and the width to the diameter including the clip. Once I was happy with the diameter I wrapped the pen slots in suede. Making sure … Continue reading Slimline triple Emperor

The new Emperor

I think this is the first flat backed Emperor pen case I have made the others have all been the round style. As with all of my cases I started with flat stock kydex sheet suede and leather. The Kydex was heated until soft and pliable it was placed in a two piece mould and pressure was applied. Once the kydex had cooled I trimmed the excess and wrapped it in burgundy suede. Veg tanned leather was soaked in cold water and formed over the same mould before being dyed Mahogany. I spent quite a bit of time getting the … Continue reading The new Emperor
